What is Habitat?

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Linda and Millard Fuller. A non-profit, ecumenical, Christian organization, it's mission is to provide decent, affordable, safe housing through volunteer labor and tax deductible donations.
Habitat is not a give away program. It builds or rehabilitates houses which are sold to the new homeowner at no profit. A no-interest 10 to 20 year mortgage is issued and monthly payments go into a revolving fund to build more houses.
The new homeowner is also required to provide 250-500 hours of "sweat equity" in construction of houses or work at Habitat fundraisers.
Throughout the world, the cost of Habitat homes varies widely. It may be $500.00 in less developed countries to an average of $38,000 in the United States.
Former US President Jimmy Carter has given Habitat world wide exposure. This has allowed the ministry to build homes for over 100,000 family members in 52 countries. President Carter said "The sacrifice I thought I would be making turned out to be one of the greatest blessings of my life....I don't know of anything I've ever seen that more vividly demonstrates love in action than Habitat for Humanity."
Shelter is a basic human need. Habitat is committed to providing everyone with a decent place to live.
